At VCN, we use MySQL as our database software. SQL stands for Structured Query Language.
"SQL (Structured Query Language) is a standard interactive and programming language for getting information from and updating a database. Although SQL is both an ANSI and an ISO standard, many database products support SQL with proprietary extensions to the standard language. Queries take the form of a command language that lets you select, insert, update, find out the location of data, and so forth. There is also a programming interface."
There's a lot of information available on the web regarding SQL, check this SQL Tutorial.
For in depth information on MySQL, you can check out the MySQL Documentation.
Download MySQL Front, a client-side tool for managing and administering databases.
To connect to your database, you will need:
- hostname - for VCN databases, the hostname will be vcn.bc.ca
- username - this is the username of the database
- password - the password that corresponds to your database user
- database - you will need to know the name of you database
When building a database, you have to consider the type of information you are storing. If there is personal information, you need to assure that it will be secure.
